History of Airstream
The History of the Airstream is a rich tale full of triumph and failure and the determination of one man to create a one of a kind travel trailer. Founder Wally Byam had a deep love for travel and experiencing the world around him, which many believe is what inspired him to create the Airstream line. In 1929 Wally Byam built the first Airstream trailer that was a tent contraption built on a Model T chassis. However, it was not waterproof and therefore was not ideal for rainy conditions. That same year he replaced his tent with a teardrop-shaped permanent shelter and added a stove and fridge.
This design was easy to tow and caught the eyes of many passerbyers and would be the staple for what Airstream is today. In the 1930’s the first ever mass produced Airstream travel trailer was debuted, the Airstream Torpedo and was soon followed by other small campers however this design was to become the iconic style of Airstream trailers you see today. Throughout the next several years Wally Byam would continue to push the envelope on what a camper could do. In the 1950’s he convinced a local businessman to develop the first-ever hot water system in a trailer. Later on, Airstream developed the first-ever “self-contained” travel trailer – one with full freedom from external trailer hookups, like outside sources of power and would forever change the way people thought of travel trailers.
In the 60’s, the Airstream trailer would receive its first major facelift. The result was an Airstream with rounded edges and more streamlined shape and added almost a foot in length and width Over the next few decades, the Airstream trailer would go under several other redesigns and would become the household name that is is today. Know for its strength and durability as well as its ability to be easily moved from place to place these travel trailers would become apart of the American household for many years to come.
